- Different fixed positions
On-board charger is a charger fixed on the new energy electric vehicle, which is limited by the space and weight of the whole vehicle, small in size, light in weight and small in power.
Off-board charger is fixed outside the electric vehicle, which is not limited by the space and weight of the whole vehicle, and has large volume and power.
- Different power supply modes
The on-board charger is connected to the AC socket through the plug and cable, and converts the single-phase 220V AC or three-phase 380V AC into the DC available for the vehicle power battery to charge the power battery. Therefore, it can also be called the AC charger, also known as "slow charging".
Its advantage is that whenever and where the vehicle power battery needs to be charged, it can be charged as long as there is available AC power socket, which is very convenient. Slow charging is conducive to extending the service life of the vehicle power battery.
Its disadvantage is that limited by the space on the vehicle, the power is generally small, and can only provide small current and slow charging, and the charging time is generally long.
The off-board charger is connected with the AC power grid to convert the AC power into a controllable DC power supply to charge the vehicle power battery. It is generally installed in the DC charging pile, also known as the DC charger. Because of its large power, it is also known as "fast charging".
Its advantages are that it is not limited by car space, high power, can provide large current for fast charging, and short charging time.
The disadvantage is that the power is relatively large, so the volume and quality are large, the construction cost is high, and it cannot be moved, resulting in fewer DC fast charging piles, which can not meet the current large number of charging needs, so it is not convenient to charge. In addition, if the battery is often used for fast charging, it will shorten the service life of the battery. It is suggested to take "slow charging as the main method and fast charging as the auxiliary method".
- Different components
As a power electronic system, the on-board charger is mainly composed of power circuit and control circuit. The power circuit is composed of AC voltage regulator, transformer and power tube, which mainly converts AC power into DC power required by the battery; The control circuit realizes the communication with the battery management system and controls the power circuit to output a certain voltage and current according to the demand.
Off-board charger is composed of the power unit, control unit, metering unit, charging interface, power supply interface and human-computer interface.
Its advantages are that it is not limited by car space, has high power, can provide a large current for fast charging, and short charging time.
