What is the function of on-board charger?

Jan 30,2023 | TCcharger

As the country's requirements for air quality become higher and higher, it is also a big challenge for the automobile industry, so the development of new energy vehicles is very necessary. Now the market of new energy vehicles is growing, and the development potential is huge. So the sideline of new energy vehicles is also booming. Have you heard of on-board chargers? Today, I want to introduce to you the function of on-board charger. Many people don't understand it. Let's have a look. More professional knowledge of new energy vehicles is in the "excellent energy engineers", from easy to difficult, from simple to deep, all-round learning, and credit concern.

On-board charger refers to the charger fixed on the electric vehicle, which has the ability to fully charge the electric vehicle power battery safely and automatically. According to the data provided by the battery management system (BMS), the charger can dynamically adjust the charging current or voltage parameters, perform corresponding actions, and complete the charging process.

Function introduction
(1) It has the function of communication between high-speed CAN network and BMS to judge whether the battery connection status is correct; Obtain the battery system parameters, as well as the real-time data of the whole group and single battery before and during charging.

(2) It can communicate with the vehicle monitoring system through the high-speed CAN network, upload the working status, working parameters and fault alarm information of the charger, and accept the command to start or stop charging control.

(3) Complete safety protection measures: AC input overvoltage protection function; AC input undervoltage alarm function; AC input overcurrent protection function; DC output overcurrent protection function; DC output short-circuit protection function; Output soft start function to prevent current impact. During the charging process, the charging function ensures that the temperature, charging voltage and current of the power battery do not exceed the allowable value; It also has a single battery voltage limit function, which automatically adjusts the charging current dynamically according to the battery information of BMS.

Automatically determine whether the charging connector and charging cable are connected correctly. The charger can only be allowed to start the charging process after it is correctly connected with the charging pile and battery; When the charger detects that the connection with the charging pile or battery is abnormal, it immediately stops charging. The charging interlocking function ensures that the vehicle cannot be started before the charger and power battery are connected separately; High voltage interlock function, when there is high voltage that endangers personal safety, the module is locked without output; It has flame retardant function.

The technical development of on-board charger provides strong support for the practicality and popularization of new energy vehicles. This paper introduces the types of chargers, which are divided into contact charging system and induction charging system according to whether the charging system is in direct contact with the public power grid; According to whether the charging system is installed on the vehicle, it is divided into on-board charging system and off-board charging system; According to the charging time, it is divided into slow charging system and final charging system. The performance characteristics of on-board charger, AC charging pile and DC charging pile are analyzed and compared. It introduces and analyzes the common charging methods of on-board charger, including constant voltage charging, constant current charging, phased charging, pulse charging, etc., and describes the technical requirements of on-board charger, such as general regulations, environmental requirements, input voltage and frequency.
